“Every student should have first-hand experiences of the workplace through work visits, work shadowing and/or work experience to help their exploration of career opportunities, and expand their networks” DfE Statutory Guidance 2018
- All students in Year 10 and Year 12 at MGS are required to undertake a one-week work experience placement with a company of their choice
- Work experience placements takes place during Extended Learning Week in July
A useful and relevant work experience placement enhances future university and employment applications, and for some degree courses, will be essential.
Students are responsible for organise their own placements, with support from family and school. Students are encouraged to be ambitious and try to set up a work experience in an area relevant to their career or further study interests. Although most students stay in the UK, each year some students use family contacts to obtain a placement abroad.
Looking for a Placement
Gaining a good placement is a competitive process so it is imperative that students act quickly and start contacting companies early in the academic year. Most companies will only offer one or two placements a year and will work on a “first come, first served” basis.
Many students use contacts through family and friends to find a placement.
MGS also has contact details of all the companies who have offered placements to our students in the past on the “Careers” section of the school VLE and the majority of these are happy to continue considering applications from MGS students. There is also a speculative letter template you might like to use when contacting employers.
Alternatively www.yell.com is a good starting point for identifying companies to contact.
