Careers

Mrs S Acaster (Careers Lead) is able to offer individual support and advice to all sixth form students on university and employment options. Additional support and advice are available from tutors.

Every year we host a Higher Education Fair in our own Big Hall at which students and parents will be able to meet and ask questions of representatives of around 50 top universities and other institutions from around the country. Other careers and employer events are also hosted in school, and students have the opportunity to attend external events such as apprenticeship fairs, university taster courses and open days. Throughout the year we have a variety of visiting speakers in school from further and higher education and the world of work, and students can sign up to attend these presentations.

Students in Year 12 will complete a week of work experience in the summer term. In the recent past, students have had the opportunity to shadow MPs, barristers, journalists, accountants, architects, engineers, police officers and doctors. They have worked at the BBC, Rolls Royce, Maidstone Studios, the Bank of England, Crown Office Chambers, the City of London Police, No 10 Downing Street, the Olympic Games Committee, Red Bull and Nike. Students have been able to work with companies abroad, travelling as far afield as Paris, Hong Kong, California and Morocco.

Preparation for UCAS applications begins during Year 12 with the all-important UCAS Examinations in May. In addition, students who intend to apply to Oxford or Cambridge University or for Medicine and Veterinary Science etc will begin mentoring sessions early in Year 12.

Year 13 is the time for university or employment applications to be completed. Those who do not wish to apply to university can be confident that they will continue to receive individual support and guidance on alternative options whatever they choose to do. Our students secure top-flight university places. Every year some go to Oxford & Cambridge. For the last two years more than 35% have gone to Russel Group universities and in 2018, 58% went to the top 30 universities in the country.
