Statutory Requirements for Careers Education in Schools

“The Government’s careers strategy, published on 4 December 2017, sets out a long term plan to build a world class careers system that will help young people and adults choose the career that is right for them.”  DfE Statutory Guidance 2018

“To achieve this aim, the careers strategy sets out that every school and academy providing secondary education should use the Gatsby Charitable Foundation’s Benchmarks to develop and improve their careers provision.” DfE Statutory Guidance 2018

In summary, these are:

  1. A stable careers programme
  2. Learning from career and labour market information
  3. Addressing the needs of each pupil
  4. Linking curriculum learning to careers
  5. Encounters with employers and employees
  6. Experiences of workplaces
  7. Encounters with further and higher education
  8. Personal guidance

Each of the benchmarks have sub criteria for how they can be achieved and schools have until the end of 2020 to meet all the benchmarks.

In MGS we currently meet six of the eight benchmarks fully, with Benchmarks 4 and 5 being partially met. Plans are already in place to fully meet all eight benchmarks within the next 2 years.


Quality in Careers

Quality in Careers Standard:

  • The Quality in Careers Standard is a national quality award assessing excellence in Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance Provision.
  • MGS has held the Quality in Careers Standard Award through Investor in Careers (IiC) since 2012 and will be undergoing reassessment in 2018.
