16+ Travel Card

To apply for a Kent 16+Travel Card for the period 1 September 2017 – 31 August 2018

The standard full-year cost of a pass for the Kent 16+ Travel Card for the period 1 September 2017-31 August 2018 is £400.

To apply for a Kent 16+Travel Card students must fulfil the following requirements:

  • Be 16-19 years old and in academic years 12-14 (to be eligible your date of birth must be between 01/09/1998 and 31/08/2001);
  • Be a resident of Kent (i.e. whose household pays Council Tax to a Kent district council for KCC services);
  • Attend a participating education or work-based learning provider (Travel Cards will be sent to the learning provider for distribution to students; this will be the Bursary at MGS)

Please ensure that you have read the following Kent County Council documents, available from the KCC website below (copies also available in the MGS Bursary), relating to the Kent 16+ Travel Card for 2017-18 before applying:-

  • 16+ TC Leaflet
  • 16+ TC Terms and Conditions
  • 16+ TC Code of Conduct
  • 16+TC Participating Operators, Special Services and Exceptions

Students must apply directly to Kent County Council either online or in the post.  Payment, however, will need to be made directly to Maidstone Grammar School.  Students may apply online at http://www.kent.gov.uk/roads-and-travel/travelling-around-kent/bus-travel/bus-passes/16-travelcard.  Alternatively the Application Form (with the necessary photo ID) can be sent to Public Transport, PO BOX 441, Aylesford, ME6 9HJ.

To ensure that cards can be available on the first day of the new academic year, applications must be received by Kent County Council’s Public Transport team no later than Friday 14 July 2017. If you apply after 14 July Kent County Council will process your application within 28 working days.  Please note that renewals are not automatic and every student wanting a pass from September will need to apply.

Kent County Council is advising students who only hold provisional places dependant on examination results to apply through the learning provider they plan to attend. Should these plans change as long as KCC is notified as quickly as possible, they will liaise with the student and the learning provider to either cancel or transfer the pass as necessary.

All applications made to KCC by 14 July 2017 which cite MGS as the learning provider will have Travel Cards available for collection on the first day of term.  Please note that Public Transport no longer issue letters for students to travel on the first day of term.  Instead, students should retain their old pass if they have one but if they do not it is not a problem. KCC have agreed with operators that any student, carrying an old pass or otherwise, should be allowed to travel for the first few days of term so that they can collect their pass from school.

You should be aware that if at any time after you have collected the Travel Card you no longer require the card, this must be returned to the Bursary so that we can liaise with KCC as to how much money is due for the card.  Please note that for all returned cards, KCC charges an administration fee of £50.

Please note that if you apply for a 16+ Travel Card and cite MGS as your learning provider, payment must be made to Maidstone Grammar School in full or by instalments as follows:-

£150 before or on collection of the Travel Card;

£100 by 31st October 2017;

£100 by 30th November 2017;

£50 by 31st January 2018

Non-payment after the deadline dates will result in the card being cancelled immediately.

For current students payment can be made on line by card through pmx.parentmail.co.uk  Alternatively payment can be made by cash or cheque made payable to Maidstone Grammar School with the student’s name and stating ‘Travel Card’ on the reverse. New students at Maidstone Grammar School will only be able to pay by card for the 2nd, 3rd & 4th instalments; the initial instalment must be by cheque or cash either before or on collection of the card.

If your household income is below £20818 and you wish to apply for 16-19 Bursary funding to assist with the cost of the travel card, other 6th form travel costs or expenditure please keep an eye out on the MGS school website in the next few weeks or contact the Bursary.

Applications to Kent County Council for a Travel Card part-way through the year will be charged at a prorata fee, details of which are shown in the afore-mentioned KCC 16+ Travel Card Leaflet.

Lost, stolen or damaged passes

Where the card has been lost, stolen or damaged, a replacement will be issued subject to a £10 administration fee. Should the replacement be lost, stolen or damaged, two further replacements during the academic year (at a cost of £10 each) may be obtained directly through KCC before you have to make a further application to join the scheme (and pay another application fee).
