Maidstone Grammar School complies with the Co-ordinated Admissions Scheme run by the Kent Local Authority.






If your child is due to start secondary school in September 2017 you can appeal between 1 March and 29 March 2017 to guarantee that your appeal will be heard by 15 June 2017. For applications made in the normal admission round, appeals must be heard within 40 school days of the deadline for lodging appeals.  For late applications, appeals should be heard within 40 schools days from the deadline for lodging appeals where possible, or within 30 schools days of the appeals being lodged.

MGS oversubscription explanation:

The Kent Test pass mark was 320 out of 423.  Criterion 2 for admission to MGS states that pupils must achieve at least a mark half way between the pass mark and the maximum marks available in the Kent Test.

For this year, this will mean a score of 371 (*rounded down) or more will secure entry under the over subscription criteria listed for Criterion 2 in the order of (a) siblings and (b) those living shortest distance from the school.

* where a half way score produces a .5 figure the score will be rounded down.

Last year this resulted in 45 of the 175 boys that we admit each year, which is approximately 25% of the cohort.

All other places will be allocated based on Criterion 3, pupils who have been assessed as suitable for a grammar school place resident in one of the listed parishes in the order of (a) siblings and (b) those living shortest distance from the school.

Last year this resulted in going out to a distance of 5.12 miles.

Criterion 4 will only be applied if places do not fill on Criterion 1, 2 and 3


Looked After Children/Children in Local Authority Care

A child under the age of 18 years for whom the local authority provides accommodation by agreement with their parents/carers (Section 22 of the Children Act 1989) or who is the subject of a care order under Part IV of the Act. This applies equally to children who immediately after being looked after by the local authority became subject to an adoption, residence or special guardianship order. (As defined by Section 46 of the Adoption and Children Act 2002 or Section 8 or 14A of the Children Act 1989).


A child who has been assessed as suitable for admission to grammar school. To be eligible boys should be assessed through the Kent Age 11 Selection Procedure.

Sibling/Current Family Association

A brother or sister attending the School when the child starts. In this context brother or sister means children who live as brother or sister in the same house, including natural brothers and sisters, adopted siblings, stepbrothers or sisters and foster brothers and sisters.

Distance/Nearness of children’s home to school

The school uses measurements provided by the LA. The LA use the distance between the child’s permanent home address and the school, measured in a straight line using Ordnance Survey address point data. Distances are measured from a point defined as within the child’s home to a point defined as within the school as specified by Ordnance Survey. The same address point on the school site is used for everybody.

Child’s Home address

A child’s home address is considered to be a residential property that is the child’s only or main residence (not an address at which the child may sometimes stay or sleep) and which is either owned by the child’s parent, parents or guardian or leased or rented to them under a lease or written or rental agreement. Where partners live apart but share responsibility for the child, and the child lives at two different addresses during the week, we will regard the home address as the one at which the child sleeps for the majority of week days.

Years 12-13 

Criteria for Admitting Pupils to Sixth Form for September 2018

Number of additional Year 12 places available for students being admitted to the school for the first time: 50.
Places in Year 12 will be offered to students who meet the entry requirements applying to enter the school from outside. The school will not normally admit students into Year 13. Priority will be given to existing pupils transferring from Year 11. The PAN for external candidates of 50 may be exceeded in the event that this and the number of internal pupils transferring in to Year 12 is less than the overall total figure for the year group. Students applying to the school for entry into Year 12 must meet the following academic criteria to qualify for admission:
(a) Students much achieve an average GCSE points score of 45 points or better.
(b) Students must also have GCSE English and Mathematics at a minimum of a C grade.

In addition to the above requirements students wishing to be accepted on to a particular subject programme must achieve the requirements set down for that particular course in the Curriculum Section of the Sixth Form Prospectus.
To be considered for entry students must complete the area electronic application procedure. They will then be invited to visit the school where there will be an opportunity to discuss their course choices with a senior member of staff.

Oversubscription Criteria:

In the event of more than 50 external students applying for admission to the school in Year 12 we will give priority to:
(a) External applicants in Local Authority Care. A Child in Local Authority Care is defined as being under the age of 18 years for whom the Local Authority provides accommodation by agreement with his/her parents/carers (Section 22 of the Children Act 1989) or who is the subject of a cared order under Part IV of the Act.
(b) External applicants who are likely to achieve the highest academic grades (ranked on predicted grades from their own school – GCSEs already certificated will be counted). Where learners have achieved better result than the predicted grades they will be considered based on the grades achieved and ranked accordingly for any places that become available as a result of other learners failing to meet the required entry levels.

Parents have a statutory right of appeal, should an application for a place be refused, by writing to The Clerk to the Governors, care of the school.
